The sequencing mistake
The most expensive error is hiring CFO capability on top of an unreliable accounting foundation. Strategic analysis built on unreconciled data produces confident, well-presented, wrong conclusions — which are more dangerous than no analysis, because people act on them.
The sequence is not negotiable: accurate books first, then reliable reporting, then forward planning, then strategic judgement. Each layer depends on the one below it.
Full-time, fractional or outsourced
Three ways to acquire the capability, and the choice is mostly about how much of it you need.
Full-time CFO. Complete attention, full ownership, embedded in the leadership team. Expensive, hard to recruit well, and genuinely underutilised in a business below roughly AED 150 million of revenue — which is how you end up with an expensive person doing management accounting.
Fractional or virtual CFO. Senior capability several days a month at a fraction of the cost. Suits businesses that need judgement on a monthly cycle plus availability for live decisions, rather than daily presence. The trade-off is that they are not in the building and have less operational context.
Outsourced finance function including CFO layer. The whole stack from bookkeeping to strategic advice from one provider. Strongest continuity and segregation of duties; requires that you are comfortable with the finance function sitting largely outside the business.
The UAE cost comparison
| Option | Indicative monthly cost | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Full-time CFO | AED 45,000–90,000 fully loaded | Above ~AED 150m revenue, or complex multi-jurisdiction / institutional investors |
| Fractional / Virtual CFO | AED 8,000–25,000 | AED 10m–150m revenue, monthly cadence plus live decisions |
| Finance manager + fractional CFO | AED 30,000–50,000 | Growing team needing daily management and periodic senior judgement |
| Outsourced full stack | AED 8,000–30,000 | No internal finance team, want one accountable provider |
Fully loaded means including visa, medical, gratuity accrual, leave, air ticket and bonus. The gap between the advertised salary and the true cost of a senior UAE hire is substantial.
